FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What degrees are offered by LXU?
We currently offer Master's and Doctor's degrees in ten fields - see Fields of study section. We hope to offer Bachelors degrees in 2005.

How much do they cost?
The tuition fees for a Masterīs degree are Euros 6,950 and for a Doctorīs degree Euros 9,950 if paid in full at the outset. Otherwise they are Euros 7,950 and Euros 11,850 respectively. A discount may in special cases be granted to gifted students with proven inability to pay the full fees.

Should a student wish to enrol for a Doctorīs degree within six months of completing a Masterīs degree, then a discount on the cost of the Doctorīs degree will be granted.

What do the tuition fees cover?
They cover all costs of tuition and University administration from enrolment to graduation. The application fee of Euros 100 is a separate additional fee, and if a student exceeds the standard period of time allotted for completion of his or her degree by more than three months, an additional quarterly fee of Euros 850 is payable until the degree is completed.

What are the entry requirements?
The minimum entry requirement for a Master's degree is a Bachelor's degree. The minimum entry requirement for a Doctor's degree is a Master's degree in a relevant field. LXU does not accept all applications, even where these minimum requirements are met. The student must also evince the necessary commitment to and capacity for study at the higher level. See Admissions section.

Is LXU accredited?
LXU is an independent and international university offering non-traditional degrees and, as such, is not accredited by a recognised accrediting agency in the US or elsewhere. We will be considering the value of recognition by an appropriate institution, but we believe that the best validation of our degrees is through the quality of the tuition and the proven competence of our graduates.

We do understand that the formal aspect can be important to the graduate for his or her career. However, our aim is not to conform to the standards of conventional universities but to surpass these, providing students with a profoundly effective personal advantage in handling their future in an integral and global perspective. In other words, we teach for life in the 21st century, not for specific jobs, nor for boosts in salary - although these too are likely to eventuate.

How does distance learning work with LXU?
Between the student and his or her personal mentor, assigned by the University, a Study Contract is drawn up, listing the courses the student is to do for credit and the proposed dates for their completion. Attached to the contract are Course Outlines, which detail the work to be done and the method of assessment. The course titles are standard at Master's level and may be individualised at Doctor's level. The student undertakes one individualised project of study under each course title. How many courses are taken depends on the credits allocated to each course and any prior learning credits awarded. The student and the mentor regularly communicate by email, and following completion of all coursework, the student undertakes a final project or dissertation.

Are there any residency requirements?
No, there are no residency requirements.

How long would it take for me to earn my degree?
Tuition fees cover a standard period of 2 years for a Master's degree and 3 years for a Doctor's degree. Our experience is that a normally gifted and study-competent student should be able to complete his/her programmes within this time, if he/she devotes an average of 10-15 hours a week.

Can a degree be earned solely by submission of a dissertation?
No. The student must earn a minimum of 30 graduate credits from coursework and prior learning as part of his or her Master's degree, and 45 further graduate credits from coursework and prior learning as part of his or her Doctor's degree. The maximum number of credits that may be awarded for prior learning are 12 at Master's level, and 18 at Doctor's level. Moreover, our philosophy of higher education is that students should take the entire field as their subject for holistic study, and this requires coursework in a number of areas of the chosen field.

Where and when would I graduate?
Upon completion of all coursework plus the final project or dissertation (on which the student will face an oral or written challenge), and provided all tuition fees have been paid in full, the student will be awarded his or her degree. We intend for graduation ceremonies to be held every 2 years, at different locations, depending on the distribution of students world-wide. These are not compulsory to attend, but are an opportunity to meet fellow students and faculty face to face.

Does LXU provide financial aid?
The only financial aid LXU is currently able to provide is a limited number of scholarships to needy and deserving students from developing countries, consisting in a 25% reduction of the full cost.
